AI's #1 local pick changed in about half of markets in one month
Published
If you saved one ChatGPT screenshot of the local businesses it named in your city, keep the date on it. AI Syndicate Research measured the same markets in September 2026 and again from 1 to 5 October 2026. AI assistants changed their #1 local business in 52% of 245 US markets. The 95% range is 46–58%, which is uncertainty across those markets, not the swing of a single chat. In about half of them, a different business was first a month later. One screenshot is not enough to know where you stand.
The old leader usually did not disappear. 48.2% of markets kept the same #1. Of September's #1 businesses, 79.6% were still in the top three, and 4.1% had fallen out of the top 25. Further down the list, 23% of September's top-10 businesses were out of the top 25 in October.
How the October index was measured
October's AI Local Report covered 600 markets: 30 metros in Florida, California, New York, and Texas, and 20 types of business. A market is one metro and one type of business. Twelve assistants each got three questions: the best of that type, the one to recommend, and an affordable one nearby. That was 21,600 questions, asked from 1 to 5 October 2026. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity answered with live web search. Others answered from what the model already knew. Siri and Alexa in this index are reconstructions from the kinds of sources those assistants use, not recordings. A business is ranked only when it is named in at least two independent answers.
The 52% uses the 245 Florida and California markets measured in both months. New York and Texas were new in October. AI Syndicate corrected an earlier 58% draft after matching names and websites. Stricter tests put the share between 46% and 61%.
Only 22% of markets had the same #1 for best, recommended, and affordable. In a typical market the #1 was named by 8 of 12 assistants, and even that leader showed up in only about 43% of answers. AI Syndicate says "a single AI answer about a local business is one reading, not a verdict," and that "these are observed patterns, not proof of cause." They cannot yet separate a real change in the market from the assistants answering differently the next time.
Ask the same local question twice
Growth Rankers updated its AI Visibility Index on 7 October 2026. They asked the same local question twice, in a fresh chat or search, for six trades in Greenville, North Carolina. Run-to-run overlap averaged about 53% for ChatGPT, about 34% for Gemini, and about 78% for Perplexity. ChatGPT's two runs matched on none of the six. One plumber answer named nobody, which they say pulls that average down. Perplexity matched on 4 of 6. They call the sample directional: one city, one day, and two runs. It is a different study from the citation counts below. Local answers are inconsistent, so measure a share of appearances across repeated checks.
What an owner can do with a moving list
Repeat the check. Save the date, the sentence, and whether you were named, only mentioned, or absent. Ask again in a new chat, with web search on for ChatGPT. How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT is a 15 minute version of that sheet. It does not guarantee you will be named.
Directories and review pages carry a large share of the citations AI Syndicate counted. About 54% went to roughly 280 review sites, directories, and other platforms. Websites identified as a ranked business's own were about 11%. Yelp led overall, and the leading site still changed by trade. Open a cited listing and match the name, phone, and city to your site. Claim the listing that already exists. Do not add a second one, and do not write or buy reviews.
Your site still matters. Put your name, city, phone, and the job you do in normal text. A page that blocks search crawlers is harder for an assistant to read. Publishing that page does not place you in an answer. OpenAI says placement in ChatGPT search is not guaranteed. These figures are patterns in what assistants said, not a cause, and not a promise. NamedScan does not place you into an answer. We do not promise or guarantee rankings or recommendations. See the disclaimer.

NamedScan measures ChatGPT with live web search. We do not check the other eleven assistants, and we do not place you into answers. The free preview asks three customer questions and shows whether you were named. No card. You can also follow the ChatGPT guide yourself. The $5 report covers 15 questions and a PDF. Monthly plans are Starter (Guided) at $199, Done For You at $300, the plan we recommend, and Growth at $500. Cancel anytime. None of them buys a slot in ChatGPT.
